Materials are cheaply put together and it is difficult to get good thread at a good depth on the pipe. Also the tubing for the auto oiling feature is too short so when you lift the die head it becomes detached and oil goes everywhere. I would not recommend this pipe threader unless you don’t need the pipe you are threading to seal. If you plan to use it for gas or water piping this is probably not a good option. The oil does not dispense at the correct location to properly lubricate the dies. There is no easy way to disengage the pipe once you have completed your thread.

Even with the best grind possible, a single point threading insert will start to wear the moment it touches metal. The stress builds up to a point where the hardened material of the die just fatigues and breaks away in small pieces at the crest where the die is doing the most work. Upto this point, the dies will make the same profile every time. Practically no adjustments are needed throughout the life of the rolls, which is typically tens of thousands of parts per set. The blank size prior to roll threading will be near the maximum pitch diameter and the material displaced by the dies will form up to fall within the major diameter tolerance. That meant that the pre-roll thread diameters were properly chamfered and ground to the correct pitch diameter, a hypothetical diameter in between the major and minor diameters, which is used to determine thread size.

The LT4 “HotCam” is a completely different animal- way to much duration for what you’re doing, and the lift is definitely beyond what a stock Vortec can handle (.525/.525 with the 1.6 rockers spec’ed for that cam).
